We’ve all been in situations (with one or more people) where things went south rather quickly and some sort of disagreement results in a few bruised egos and frazzled feelings.

And normally such situations are not too difficult to handle if it involves strangers – and so forgiveness almost seems effortless. It’s those situations where someone very close – family, friend or folk from church – does something that makes no sense… and forgiveness takes on a whole new meaning.

Such times are designed to either send our emotions into overdrive, and or to rob us of our joy. And it’s usually in these moments, that it’s easy to think the unkindest thoughts about the person(s) who we believe has caused us pain.

Recently, I experienced something that made me feel like my world was tumbling down. And instinctively, I called a friend – because let’s face it – we like to vent before we fall on our knees.
And, it was after I ended that call, that I realised I didn’t have to call because I wasn’t alone… God is always right there with us… even in the height of the storm.

I also thought, as shattered as I was feeling, I’m not God and can’t possibly stand in judgement of any person.
Secondly, what does Luke 6:27, 28 tell us we ought to do when people hurt us:
“But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.”

Emotions aside, putting scripture into practice is not a mission impossible. And why do I say this? Because I believe that our default settings are kindness and love and so if we choose them over the anger, bitterness and possibly even a grudge then embracing the concept of forgiveness becomes easier.

Take a moment to think… is there someone who has upset you, someone who you need to forgive and release?

Beloved, love covers a multitude of sins.
This day, let us choose to recommit our lives, our hearts and all that we are to walk in love and kindness…

No masks here…

This post is courtesy of a conversation I had with a dear friend yesterday. For purposes of this (and future posts) I shall refer to him as Positive Paul. We all need that one friend who can lift the band aid off in one go and after it’s done you still feel like you are walking on sunshine; for me, that person is Positive Paul.

This chat came about because I shared with him a comment I made to someone who I believed could’ve been a good friend. Sadly, that didn’t pan out as I had hoped and like I said to Positive Paul, the brief exchange, spurts of banter/laughter was appreciated while it lasted and certainly gave me a different perspective.

No regrets.

Only gratitude.

So through this experience I realised that I’m actually in a good space; a space where it’s tickets for anyone who doesn’t appreciate my time or worth. Life is way too short for one sided relationships (family, friends) or to pretend to be anything than your authentic self.

You see, quirks and all, Positive Paul reminded me that the people who are meant to be in my life will appreciate:

• my off-key singing
• random comments / messages
• “complicated” laugh (only he knows what that means)
• midnight ramblings
• over-thinking and analysis of a situation

I guess he has a point because when all is said and done:

• I give wholeheartedly
• I give freely
• I give without expectation
• I am fiercely loyal
• I am brutally honest
• I like to talk
• I care – too much
• I cry when someone is sad or in pain
• I am a hopeless romantic
• Yes, I am an all or nothing person… and make no apologies for it. Because, I’m worth it!

Let me leave you with words of wisdom from former president, Nelson Mandela: “May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears.”

Thank you for taking the time to read.

Last night I came across a trending topic (#ImOldEnoughToKnow) on Twitter that got me to sit back and think. Here are a few of things I’ve come to realise:

I’m old enough to know… the Author and Finisher and that He has the final say in all matters.

I’m old enough to know… that the winds of change are essential to our journey.

I’m old enough to know… when to keep quiet and simply listen.

I’m old enough to know… who is in my front row.

I’m old enough to know… why they were chosen to be part of my story.

I’m old enough to know… that what others think or say about me is really none of my business.

I’m old enough to know… that the choices I make have consequences.

I’m old enough to know… that I alone take responsibility for my actions.

I’m old enough to know… that it’s okay that I don’t always have all the answers.

I’m old enough to know… that I need to trust the process even when it doesn’t make sense.

I’m old enough to know… that it’s okay to be in a funk but the important thing is to snap out of it.

I’m old enough to know… that not everyone who smiles is in your corner.

I’m old enough to know… that you will meet Judas along your path; pray and let God take control.

I’m old enough to know… that when people choose to act disrespectfully, it’s not about you.

I’m old enough to know… that your purpose means you won’t win any popularity contest. That’s fine.

I’m old enough to know… that there’s a time to blend and a time to sit still and stay in your lane.

I’m old enough to know… that the hurt, pain and tears will eventually give way to smiles and peace.

I’m old enough to know… love is everything.

I’m old enough to know… that staying true to YOU is what is important.

I’m old enough to know… that God alone will vindicate you. Always. His grace is sufficient.

Thank you for taking the time to read.

God, hindsight, journey, life, lifetime, new year, pain, purpose, reason, resolution, season

Since my last post so much has happened. Some days felt like I was riding a roller-coaster ride that had no brakes and other times it was pure bliss.

With hindsight it’s safe to say that even the uneasy, unpleasant times offered me a nudge in the right direction. I now have a much better understanding of people coming into our lives for a reason, season and lifetime. I’ve also found peace in the fact that when a season is up and a person has fulfilled his/her role in your story that it’s okay to let them go. The trouble starts when we try to hold on longer than we ought to.

And so as I sit here typing, I can safely say that, I’ve made peace with the fact that some people will not continue to journey with me in 2015.

I’ve never been so excited about the thought of starting a new year. I’m not one of those resolution-making types; I’m more about evolving authentically one moment at a time. The more we edge closer to 2015 the more humbled I am about what God has in store. No eye has seen, no ear has heard…

Only now (finally, the penny dropped) I understand how vital it is to embrace the fact that the journey is not about me; that there’s a reason to the pain/pleasure and I can’t wish away my Divine purpose.

The one important reminder from this past week is that when you allow God to have His way the rewards and learnings are beyond measure… TGBTG!

So, wherever you are and whatever you are facing, know that ultimately all things work together for your good. Even when it feels like you’re caught up in a storm that’s not letting up, remember the One who holds you in the palm of His hand is greater… and has the final say.

Thank you for taking the time to read.
