Dr Mandy Laing, chiropractor extraordinaire, is an unassuming and gentle soul. Many have benefitted from her holistic approach and I caught up with her recently, to find out more about her profession.

* What gets you out of bed in the morning? Knowing that I’ve been given another day to impact somebody’s life. Whether it be with my job by improving someone’s health, sharing the love of Christ with anyone or possibly even just teaching my son something useful for his life ahead.

* What three words would you use to describe yourself? I am strong-willed, supportive, level-headed.

* How would you describe your day job to a child? I do treatments on peoples’ bodies to help them feel better and be able to live better lives.

* What is your biggest achievement to date – personal or professional? Starting my own practice after finishing my masters as a single parent.

* What does a typical day look like for you? Chaotic morning school rush. Workout. Work. Errands. Quality time with my son. Cook. Scattered with eating time and prayer.

* What three words would you use to describe your role? Health partner, leader, helper.

* What are some of your professional challenges (if any)? There are many challenges in the chiropractic profession. We’re private primary health care providers, so we are in no way affiliated with the public health care system. This means after our gruelling 6-year course, there are no postings once we qualify. We must find our own way. Some join other practices, some start their own, some don’t even practice as chiropractors. The market is difficult to tackle due to strict regulations and a lack of public education about the profession. Advertising is not allowed, and medical aids provide insufficient funds for their members, while some don’t cover us at all. We are also still viewed as alternative health care; therefore, we are not always taken seriously and often misunderstood by the medical fraternity.

* Do you have a mentor? Unfortunately, not. I had reached out to a lady who had relocated soon after. However, there are many resources available for the purposes of gaining knowledge and learning from the mistakes of others. An informative book can do you a world of good. Chiropractors are also good with sharing knowledge and experiences.

* If you could change one thing about your working environment, what would it be and why? I would love to work near the beach in bigger premises. This will happen soon.

* What do you like most about your job? Objectively observing people’s lives improve in terms of their pain levels, their demeanour and general attitude towards life. A small bit of pain relief for some people is as good as a holiday. I’m just glad I can help their bodies improve functionally.

MandyDeets

* What advice would you give to those wanting to get into this field? It’s a great health care system. It’s the healthcare of the future. Chiropractic is growing faster than medicine ever did. There are many out there who’ve never heard of chiropractic. So, the opportunities are limitless. It’s natural and holistic and it improves quality of life. Just make sure you’ve got the drive to succeed.

* When was the last time you laughed so hard you cried? Almost every week. I’ve got some awesome friends and a son with a deep sense of humour. There’s never a shortage of laughs with us!

* Given a chance, who would you like to be for a day? Trevor Noah! But a Christian version. He’s got a great perspective on life. Very positive outlook that I enjoy.

* What’s your favourite line from a film? “The problem is not the problem; the problem is your attitude towards the problem…” Jack Sparrow

* What’s your most memorable facepalm moment? Too many to mention!

* What is your guilty pleasure? Anything with caramel.

There are moments when it feels like life is coming at you, fast and hard.
And it’s at these times that you need your faith to be rock solid; and more importantly, you need to be surrounded by fearlessly authentic people.

What you don’t want is a fence-sitter or someone who suffers from delusions of grandeur, on your side.
Be around people whose motives are clean and clear, whose reputations are impeccable and not afraid to stand for the truth. Not their “truth” but the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

To paraphrase Tera Carissa-Hodges, when the lies, slander, backstabbing, plotting and planning happens, don’t lose focus because those intentional acts are all part of the purpose.

Painful as the lessons may be, the “tables have turned”.
Trust the process and trust that God alone still has the final say.

So, if you find yourself at a crossroads, we have a saying here in South Africa – vasbyt.
It simply means, press on… and hold onto Romans 8:28.

Thank you for taking the time to read.

Challenge, choose, compassion, fabulous, favoured, Focus, grow, Headlines, heart, Humanity, kindness, learn, life, Live, love, Morning, purpose, Serve, share, Sow, Speak, thank you, Think, time, unconditional love

I woke up with a song in my heart. It’s a golden oldie but the words ring true today, more than ever.

Some of the lyrics: “What the world needs now, is love, sweet love… it’s the only thing, that there’s just too little of…”

The ghastly headlines, the atrocious stories of inhumanity, hurt and hate, and all-round anger seems to be the order of the day. But… why?

Where have we gone wrong?

Why are people triggered so easily?

What is missing?

Can we find our way again?

Can one person make a difference?

These are some of the questions I contemplated.

It appears we lost our way when we lost our ability to love – and when I speak about love, I mean unconditional love.

It appears we are missing that all important fundamental that we are all born with – compassion; having a heart for others.

It appears we have become complacent and happy to focus on our own needs and those within our sphere.

It appears we have taken our eye off the goal – the purpose of walking and serving in love.

It appears that we have allowed ourselves to be swept up in all that is unkind, cruel and selfish.

But…

All is not lost.
We can find our way again, if we choose to look within and allow the seeds of love to spring forth.

I’d like to challenge you.
When life chooses to distort the canvass of (y)our world, I hope you will always choose to sow seeds of love; and not just any love… unconditional love.

Thank you for taking the time to read.

As we begin to take stock and prepare to apply a full stop to this year, I asked my brother Jarryd Kast to share some of his thoughts. I hope you will enjoy his post below as much as I did.

And from me, I hope you will always choose to rise and thrive in 2017. Be fearlessly authentic and embrace every moment life presents to you.

Thank you for taking to the time to read.

From the desk of Jarryd Kast:

As I get ready to do a curtain call on what has been one of my most challenging years, I couldn’t help but take a ride down memory lane and reflect on some of the most unforgettable occurrences.

I, like so many others couldn’t be happier to see 2016 come to an end. This year has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride, sadly with more lows than highs.

You know the saying, ‘You will be brought down to your knees’… Well, that happened to me. Literally!

Long story short, I decided to quit my job late last year (2015) and head back to the city where I was born and bred. The decision came about after months of internal deliberation. I had just had enough of the town’s laidback, country-styled living conditions. And not forgetting the residents’ backward mentality. I wasn’t prepared to live in South Africa’s pre 1994 era all over again.

I knew I had more to offer the world, so I manned up and jumped straight into the unknown.

Well, it probably wasn’t one of the wisest decisions I’ve made, because I struggled to find a job, and ended up suffering a spell of unemployment for over a year. I applied for numerous vacancies, got calls to say I was shortlisted, and pitched up for countless interviews. But for some strange reason, I just couldn’t successfully bag these jobs.

And to top it all off, my long-term relationship with my now ex-girlfriend came to an abrupt end.

Although I felt like my world was torn apart and turned upside down, deep down I knew it’s all happening for a reason. Don’t get me wrong. At the time, it felt like I was walking through hell’s corridors, but as they say – time heals.

Thankfully, that is all over, and today I’m working abroad – living, learning, surviving and thriving.

Getting back to my thoughts about the past twelve months…

I’m grateful for all the closed doors (some even slammed), for the failed relationships, and for those people who left me hanging when I needed them the most. I’m grateful for the people who we are supposed to regard as family, but who play no role whatsoever in our lives, for the folks who betrayed my trust, and for all the people who I’ve chosen to walk away from – because dang! Their toxic energy can really kill a person’s vibe.

Why am I grateful?

Because these are the people who were put into my life to teach me some of the biggest life lessons. Without their input, I wouldn’t have gained the strength, courage, boldness and wisdom I now have today.

Believe me, it isn’t easy to accept what’s happening at the time, but I’ve learnt that it is in these very moments when we let go of what’s not meant for us, that we then start to position ourselves in alignment with the blessings that God has waiting to pour down.

This year, I’ve had to say goodbye to many people in my life.

No, they didn’t physically die, but mentally they are dead to me.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve also learnt this year is cultivating your space and letting go of the toxicity which other people bring to the table. You have to surround yourself with people who share your values and ambitions. Not doing this will distract you from your goals and dreams, and lead you into thinking less of yourself. Don’t allow that to happen.

2016 also opened my eyes into seeing that the road to life can have many twisted curves. But I’ll always remain calm, because I’m continuously reassured of who’s controlling the wheel – God.

My own piece of advice I’m taking with me into the New Year:

Be wary of who you allow in your circle.

  • Protect your space. When you let the wrong people in, you may be setting yourself up for failure, and hence, you won’t be able reach the peak of your purpose.
  • Don’t attend people’s pity parties. Once you attend one, they’ll make sure your name is always on the guest list.
  • Don’t sit under people’s shade. Even if it seems like their trees have low-hanging fruit, trust me, there will be thorns on those branches.
  • Don’t become a slave to people’s mental abuse.
  • Respect yourself enough to walk away from anything or anyone that doesn’t influence you into becoming the best version of yourself.
  • Don’t sell yourself short, and don’t dim your light in order to make others shine.

I could go on and on, but duty calls.

2017 – Manifest your greatness!

When every single fibre of your being is oozing with gratitude…

Yes

That

Feeling…

In this moment, I am so thankful for:

* every single step of my journey over the last 12 months

* every “no” that came my way

* every “yes” when I least expected it

* every “not yet” when I didn’t understand or felt frustrated

Things always work out for your good when you know that greater is He that is in you…

What I know for sure, this year is going to end on such a high note; beyond your wildest expectations.

Just wait and see.

Thank you for taking the time to read.

My favourite times of the day is just before sunrise and just before I head off into dream land (like now).

The house is absolutely still and the calm of the night has a reassuring message.
A message that says you are alive, you survived the brutality of life’s curveballs…
You’ve got what it takes to be victorious – thanks to the Cross and all that it represents.

The past few weeks have been surreal. I have had so many “oh-my-hat” kinda moments coupled with immeasurable gratitude.

We live and learn daily – some experiences are more pleasant than others but ultimately everything we endure points back to Romans 8:28.

Whatever position you currently find yourself in, know that it’s time for the tables to turn.
No more delays.
No more frustrations.
No more tactics to throw you off course.

You’ve stood firmly on the Rock and you’ve persevered so now is YOUR time to rise and thrive!

Embrace it and celebrate. There were moments you felt like throwing in the towel, but the Author & Finisher of ALL things made it clear that He’s not done. In fact, He’s just getting started in pouring out His best for you.

Stay centred.
Stay in His presence.
Stay true to your core being.

Let them talk, let them fabricate all sorts of assertions, let them email, let them conference call, for as long as you stay authentic, the truth will come out. Eventually.

Besides, as someone dear to me said, “eagles have no time to concern themselves with the pettiness of chickens.” So, from this moment on, I hope you choose to renew your strength and rise on up where you belong.

Thank you for taking the time to read.

Perfect timing…

Adventure, courage, friend, grace, heart, life, Live, New beginnings, Promises, Rise, strength, world

A very dear friend sent me this poem earlier today.
The timing couldn’t have been more perfect.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

For a New Beginning
by John O’Donohue

In out-of-the-way places of the heart,
Where your thoughts never think to wander,
This beginning has been quietly forming,
Waiting until you were ready to emerge.

For a long time it has watched your desire,
Feeling the emptiness growing inside you,
Noticing how you willed yourself on,
Still unable to leave what you had outgrown.

It watched you play with the seduction of safety
And the gray promises that sameness whispered,
Heard the waves of turmoil rise and relent,
Wondered would you always live like this.

Then the delight, when your courage kindled,
And out you stepped onto new ground,
Your eyes young again with energy and dream,
A path of plenitude opening before you.

Though your destination is not yet clear
You can trust the promise of this opening;
Unfurl yourself into the grace of beginning
That is at one with your life’s desire.

Awaken your spirit to adventure;
Hold nothing back, learn to find ease in risk;
Soon you will be home in a new rhythm,
For your soul senses the world that awaits you.
