Since last week I’ve been house bound. Not out of choice, I must point out. I traipsed off to the office on Monday morning choosing to ignore the fact that I felt a little under the weather and was minus a voice. Oh the horror of not being able to speak; and some of my colleagues were finding this a delightful site to behold.

Long story short, one look at me and our medical team were mortified at the fact that I drove to the office instead of “calling” (read: text or mail) in sick. I tried to offer some sort of defense about it being a Monday blah-blah-blah but they were not interested. Instead, they armed me with the relevant meds, read me the riot (read: wellness act) and sent me on my way.

Chicken soup. Check.

Water. Check.

Fruit. Check.

Chocolate. Check.

Meds. Check.

I was ready for a week of “solitary confinement” and as someone who hardly ever gets sick, I figured this flu/laryngitis wouldn’t last more than three days. Boy, oh boy, was I wrong.

My body felt like it was being panel-beated and I just couldn’t break a stubborn fever. At that point my life seemed like it was a scene from Bridget Jones’s Diary. I couldn’t call anyone (the joys of being a migrant worker). I contemplated texting my neighbour to drive me to the ER but decided against this for two reasons: apart from an initial introduction and one other time I texted to apologise for triggering the alarm, we hadn’t really spoken. So imagine now asking him to be my personal uber? Even my feverish self knew this was a bad idea….

At the first glimpse of daylight, I drove to my GP and she confirmed it was no longer the flu but bronchitis. The good news was that the fever broke, I was given a much stronger antibiotic and my voice had returned but she warned me to “take it easy” because I wasn’t out of the woods just yet.

What’s the point of this post?

The aha-moment was this: words whether spoken, written or unsaid are equally important and define (positively/negatively) our lives more than we realise. More than that, we are emotional and social beings who need each other.

With a new year, a new decade mere days away, may we always choose to open our hearts and mouths… and always choose to express ourselves. That way we will have no regrets, no unanswered questions, lingering thoughts or feel like we can’t reach out for help when we need it most. After all, life is about stepping beyond the confines of our comfort zones and having the courage to speak up and reach out…

I think I’ve said this in a previous post, the reality is that no person is an island… we all need each other in one way or another; rain or shine.

Take care and stay fabulous….

Earlier today I stumbled upon a business card I picked up while in Perth earlier this year. This was no ordinary card. It belongs to a cab driver turned tour guide for the duration of my stay.

For purposes of this post, let’s call him *Pedro. A soft spoken, unassuming gentleman in his mid-50s.

Anyone who knows me will tell you that I love talking so it didn’t take me long to start “interviewing” Pedro about his life. I was intrigued by his journey and how he landed up in this part of the world.

I was even more impressed by his knowledge of the city and general global topics. I kid you not, you could bring up any subject and Pedro would be able to offer an opinion, facts, figures and some sort of history. I called him a walking-talking encyclopedia.

I think the thing that struck me the most was the way he spoke about his family – wife and daughter. His face lit up when he told me about the day they met for the first time. The hopeless romantic that I am, Pedro’s story sounded like something out of a fairytale.

The pictures just screamed happiness; and when he shared anecdotes about his daughter or how he still gets to have date night with his wife, it made me realise that some people still appreciate and respect the sanctity of marriage. Hallelujah 🙂

Perth is so pretty. The hot, dry sweltering temperatures aside, it was an unforgettable experience. I would have to say the highlight was the stop at The Margaret River Chocolate Co. Every chocoholic needs to add this to their bucket list. As I stepped in, I felt like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. You are spoilt for choice. I wanted something from every shelf but the thought of traipsing half way around the world with a chocolate stash kept me in check.

I also now realise how “Packing for Perth” or “The Australian capital of South Africans in exile” came about. I bumped into quite a few South Africans who couldn’t wait to share about life Down Under.

Not only do I have some fond memories from my time in Perth, I also have a few nuggets from *Pedro. It’s stuff I’ve heard before but somehow… he was on point and because of his PHD in Life, I found myself meditating on these comments during the 17-hour flight back home. And still today.

 For instance, he stated matter-of-factly:

  • “Don’t force anything –  anyone or anything that’s meant for you will appear when the time is right.”
  • “Your authentic self will attract real people and you will never have to second guess their motives.”
  • “Keep your heart open to give and receive love, and never stop being kind.”

As I sit and type this I find myself gazing at my screen for the longest time. The realization that it’s quite liberating when you choose to let things evolve organically.

Thank you for taking the time to read.

In this moment, I’m thankful for:

* the grace to see another day

* laughter

*unconditional love

* authentic relationships

* chocolate on demand

* the space I get to call “me time”

* people/ situations who help me realise what I don’t want

* the fact that I choose not to settle

* the fact that I choose who to invite into my personal space

* the realisation that some bridges are meant to be burnt and never walked again

* letting go of someone once their part in your story is over – it’s all about reason, season, lifetime…

* every single lesson (no matter how bitter-sweet) that has gotten me to this point

* being blessed to be a blessing

As I continue to move forth with purpose and determination, let me never for one minute take the gift of each moment or freedom to choose for granted.

Thank you for taking the time to read.

This Christmas will go down in the book of memories as one of my best. Ever.
I won’t bore you with the details other than to say, to God be the glory.
Truly, He still works in mysterious ways… and for that I’m most thankful

As the year slowly draws to an end and we look forward to the promise of 2016, my prayer for you is to:

*Continue to walk and bask in God’s grace
*Open your heart to give and receive unconditional love
*Remember that somebody loves you
*For the singles: somebody is praying to meet someone just like you
*Embrace the gift of each moment
*Enjoy the beauty of a sunset or sunrise
*Look for the rainbow after each storm
*Increase your faith
*Spend more time in prayer
*Spend more time meditating on the Word
*Choose always to live on purpose
*Laugh more
*Be courageous
*Cherish friendships
*Walk with confidence
*Shatter any self-imposed limitations
*Spread kindness
*Be a cheerful giver – of time, talent and self
*Hug more
*Talk less and listen more
*Sing more (even if it’s only in the shower)
*Ask for help
*Keep those boundaries intact
*Let go of those ties that are cut for a reason
*Take time out for you
*Sleep more
*Eat more chocolate
*Read at least one book a month
*Treat yourself as often as you can
*Always count your blessings
*Remember that you are a son/daughter of the Most High
*Immerse yourself in the favour that follows you
*Wake up each day with the knowledge that it’s your time
*2016 is the year of one miracle after another… no ear has heard or eye has seen what the Lord has in store for those who choose complete obedience
*More than anything else, I pray that you are always blessed with good health (body, mind and spirit). There’s no substitute for good health

Thank you for taking the time to read.

I love reading.
If I was stranded on a deserted island with nothing more than a pile of books, I’d be the happiest person.

Whether it’s curled up on my bed or couch, outside on the grass or sinking in the sea sand, a book plus stash of chocolate (preferably Lindt) is my guilty pleasure.

While I’m not averse to modern technology, when it comes to reading I still prefer holding a book. Turning those pages and using a bookmark.

I’m also not a selfish reader, I quite enjoy passing books along.

If you are looking for a few suggestions to your reading list, below are 5 of my must reads at the moment.

Happy reading!

I woke up feeling very emo. Not sad. Rather more thankful.

With another birthday just hours away I’m deeply grateful for the gift of life; and God’s grace showered upon me daily.

I jotted down a few things – that have shaped my journey – in my Gratitude Journal earlier and thought I’d share a few with you.

* Parents – need I say more

* Brother & sister – for keeping me grounded, the fights, laughs and memories over the years

* Cousins – they are an extension of my siblings

* Friends – for letting me be me and creating a safety net when I need it

* Nature – whether it’s soaking up the sun, feeling rain drops on my cheeks or the wind blowing through my hair

* Courage – to walk away from toxic situations & people

* Hindsight – go figure!

* Hugs – whether it’s to express appreciation or a sign of comfort and support

* Voice notes – from the special, little people in my space especially Eli and Leah

* Flowers – to remind that it’s really all about the simple things in life… that’s what makes me happy

* Chocolate – because… which woman can live without these comforting cubes?

* Books – when I need to escape nothing comes close to turning the pages of a good read

* Heartache – you haven’t lived till you’ve had your heart smashed into splinters and then for time to heal and make you whole again

* The future – I know this next chapter of my life is going to make everything else pale in comparison. That what God has in store for me no eye has seen or ear heard…

For every single moment I get to open my eyes & am blessed to declare that I’m ALIVE, my heart flows with gratitude.

P.S my birthday wish is: that YOU will live authentically & find fulfillment in every experience.

Thank you for taking the time to read.

bless, character, character-building, chocolate, cupcakes, fabulous, favoured, fundamentals, grow, learn, music, pray, purpose, satisfaction, Sunday, true test, walk away

Someone shared this and I couldn’t resist passing it on:

“A true test of good character is when we can maintain peace in the face of those who are rude, offensive and lack in basic morals & conduct.”

These words ring true.
I have found myself either biting my tongue, walking away from a situation or turning up the volume of my music over the last few weeks.

It’s been a test. Sjoe!

The reality is that some individuals, especially the unhappy ones, will try their tricks to steal your peace.

Don’t. Give. Them. The. Satisfaction.

Pray for them.
Release them.
Set and keep the boundaries in place.
Then… continue along your purpose-driven way.

If our journey was all chocolate and cupcakes we wouldn’t really learn and grow. Would we?

I believe we’ve all been equipped with certain fundamentals, so that when these character-building tests crop up, we are adequately prepared to make informed choices.

I hope you have a peaceful and blessed Sunday.

After chocolate (yes I’m a chocoholic) I love, love, love reading.

I’d gladly hand over my smartphone in exchange for a book. Apart from the bonding with family and friends over the next few days, I’ve made a conscious decision to have “book/me time”.

I think we underestimate the importance of switching off and taking time out for ourselves. It’s all well and good being on hand for everyone but YOU are just as important.

Treat yourself. Go on…

My next two reads were chosen because these are two people who make me feel so proud to be South African; they are also my idea of what makes an authentic leader.

I’ve taken a peak at the first chapter of each book and I know I’m going to give them both the thumbs up.

So, let me log off and turn a few pages…

Thank you for taking the time to read.

Life’s little pleasures…

books, chocolate, family, Friends, God, grace, introspection, laughter, love, movies, perspective, siblings, sisters, sunrises, sunsets

I’ve been doing loads of introspection of late. In this fast-paced, diary-driven world, quiet time is essential.

I find that if I don’t make a conscious effort to shut off and out, it’s so easy to drown in the noise and pessimism. As an ardent proponent of the gratitude brigade, I got thinking about the things (in no particular order) that make my days more sunshine than gray skies…

· The grace of God – where would I be without salvation?!
· My parents – for the love, values and firm foundation in life
· My siblings – for the unconditional love, support and goofy times
· Family gatherings – the love, laughter and inevitable “drama”
· Purpose – knowing what I need to do and where I’m heading
· Friends – pure joy that should be bottled
· Mentors – makes learning and growing such a treat
· Challenges – the pain is what propels me to keep moving
· Books – I love losing myself in stories that offer perspective and insight
· Writing – how many get to play with words for a living
· Chocolate – need I say more?!
· Chocolate cake and fresh cream
· Peppermint tart
· Sleep – nothing beats a good night’s rest
· The smell of freshly cut grass
· The smell of mac & cheese or bread, fresh out of the oven
· Toasted cheese sarmies
· Sunday newspapers
· Mr Delivery for those lazy pj days
· Sweatpants and “home” T-shirts
· Long weekends
· Sunrises
· Sunsets
· Old movies – Casablanca, Gone with the Wind and the like
· Re-runs of Friends, Greys Anatomy, The Fixer

I think the one thing that I treasure the most is my “sisters” from another mother who know me better than anyone; and still love me just the way I am (*cue Billy Joel’s Don’t Go Changing). These “sisters” keep me grounded, give me strength when it’s needed most and generally keep it real.

Thank you for taking the time to read.
